Tell people about a change in contact details

A contact update is simple once you decide who needs the new details and how much each group should know. If your audiences differ, ask for a separate draft for each.

A text to start with

I'm changing my email address from [old address] to [new address] and getting a new phone number on [date]. I want to send a short, casual message to close friends and family and a more formal one to professional contacts. The professional version shouldn't include my personal phone number. Please draft both. I'll add the recipients myself.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the answer

Read each draft to confirm the new email and phone number are correct, and that your personal phone number appears only in the friends-and-family version. Some people may need only the email or only the number, so trim each version to what that group needs. The assistant has not sent anything, so you decide who receives each version.

What to do next

Before sending, go through your contacts and decide which version each person gets. Update any account that uses your old email or number for login or recovery. If you need a version for another setting, such as a community group or a professional directory, ask for it and describe the tone you want.
