Build your own change-of-address checklist

Mail forwarding catches some letters for a while, but it doesn't update anyone's records. Your checklist should name each organization, how you'll update it and how soon. Sort by urgency so the ones handling money, identity or deliveries come first.

A text to start with

I move on [date] and want a change-of-address checklist I can work through. Here are the organizations I can think of: my bank, two credit cards, my employer, car insurance, my doctor's office, a pharmacy, voter registration, and four subscriptions. Group them by how urgent the update is, suggest common categories I might have missed, and add a column for when I updated each one. Leave out any account numbers.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

Getting the order right

The order matters most here. Anything tied to bills, identity documents, taxes or prescriptions should sit near the top, with subscriptions last. Treat the suggested missing categories as prompts to search your own email and statements, since no general list will match your accounts exactly. Deadlines for updating a license, vehicle registration or voter record come from the agency and vary by place. If the reply names a specific number of days, confirm it with the official source. Keep account numbers off the list and store them wherever you already keep them safely.

Fill the gaps, then start at the top

Search your inbox and recent statements for senders you forgot, and add them to the right group. Update the top group first, ideally the week before you move, and write the date beside each entry. Paste the list back later if you want it reordered after some items are done.
