Build a room-by-room moving inventory

A room-by-room inventory lets you count what left and what arrived. Number each box, note its room and a short contents line, and save a dated version each time the count changes. Keep valuables on a separate list you don't share.

A text to start with

I'm packing a three-bedroom house over two weeks and want an inventory I can update as I go. Set up a table with box number, room, short contents, fragile or not, and date packed. I'll paste in new boxes each evening, so keep a running total per room. High-value items will go on a separate private list I'll keep myself, so leave a placeholder line for them.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

Counts that add up

The count is what makes this useful on delivery day, so look for room totals and a grand total that match the box numbers. Each update should carry a date or version number, or you won't know which list the movers checked against. Contents lines need enough detail to help you find a missing box. If you plan to hand movers a copy, keep that version generic and leave valuables on your private list. If two boxes share a number, or a room total drops for no clear reason, sort it out before the truck arrives.

Use it on moving day

Print the final version on moving day and tick off boxes as they're loaded and again as they come in. Write down any missing number right away, with the time. If a box doesn't turn up, give the mover the dated list and that box's contents line when you ask them to trace it.
