Make a methodical plan to look for a lost item

Start from the last place you are sure you had the item and work outward from there. Describe what you know, and the assistant can help order the places to look and the people to contact.

A text to start with

I've lost my [item, e.g., wallet]. The last time I'm certain I had it was on [date] at [location]. Since then I've been to [places]. I've already checked [places already searched]. It might be with [person] or left at [location]. Help me build a search plan starting from what I know, including who to contact and in what order.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the answer

The plan should stick to the places and people you named. Be skeptical of steps that assume the item was somewhere you never mentioned, or that send you to contact an organization before you've searched the physical spots you can reach yourself. The assistant can't know where the item is. If it suggests a phone number or a tracking service, confirm the contact details through an official source before using them.

What to do next

Work through the plan one step at a time and cross off each place as you finish it. When someone tells you they don't have the item, report that back and ask for an updated plan. If the item is an official document, look up the replacement process with the issuing agency once the physical search is done.
