An index of household records matters most to whoever has to find something when you are unavailable. Describe the documents your household keeps and where they live, and an assistant can help you organize that into a clear list.

A text to start with
Help me create a simple index of household records for my family. Our documents are in a fireproof safe, a filing cabinet, a shared cloud folder, and a binder on the kitchen shelf. The categories are vital records, insurance policies, property documents, vehicle titles, and tax returns. I want the index to show which category is where and who in the household manages each type. I will leave out account numbers and passwords.
Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.
What to check in the answer
Someone unfamiliar with your home should be able to act on each location. A note such as second drawer, hanging folder labeled insurance beats filing cabinet. Make sure the manager column names the person who actually handles each document type, not the person who ought to. Keep passwords, full account numbers, and government ID numbers out of any document that is not itself secured. If the index will be shared, decide where the index itself will be kept.
Next step
Visit each location in the index and confirm the documents are really there, then fix any wrong entry before sharing the index. Tell the people in your household that it exists and where to find it. Share it only with the people who need it.
