Job applications
Make a job application tracker you will use
A tracker works when it is small enough to update after each application. Record the role, the date you submitted, who you dealt with, the last reply and the next action. Keep dates an employer asked for separate from reminders you chose.
Role and employer: [ ] Where I applied (site or email): [ ] Submitted date: [ ] Confirmation received: [yes / no] Contact name and title: [ ] Contact email or phone, as stated: [ ] Last reply date: [ ] What the last reply said: [ ] Date requested by the employer: [ ] Where that date was stated: [ ] Date I chose for my own follow-up: [ ] Next action: [ ] Status: [open / waiting / closed] Notes: [ ]
Dates that look firmer than they are
If an employer's deadline and your own follow-up date share one column, you may treat a personal target as someone else's rule. Give them separate columns. Take contact names and addresses from the posting or a reply, never from a guess, and leave a cell blank rather than fill it with an assumption. Check that each submitted date matches your confirmation message, and note where you filed the application so you can find it later.
Review this tracker and separate every deadline given by an employer from every date I chose myself. Flag any date that has no stated source. Flag contact details that are not traceable to a posting or message. List rows where next action is missing or unclear.
Keep it current for two weeks
Add each application the day you submit it, taking the date from the confirmation message. Review the tracker at a set time each week and update the last reply column. Label any follow-up date you pick as yours. If a posting or reply states a timeline, copy its wording into the notes so you can check it later.
