Job applications
Fit a job application answer into its word limit
Read the question for every part it asks, then build the answer from a claim, one example and an outcome. Count words after each trim. When the limit forces a cut, remove background and keep the evidence that answers what was asked.

Cuts that leave a question half answered
Trimming often drops one part of a multi-part question, such as the reason you want the role that follows the example of past work. Adding an accomplishment to strengthen a short answer is the other common error. Check the answer against the question word by word and mark where each part is addressed. Count words yourself, since a tool's count may differ from the form's, especially for numbers, hyphenated words and lists. If the form states how it counts, follow that rule and stay a few words under the limit.
Check whether the shortened answer addresses every part of the application question. List any part that is missing or only implied. Compare it with my notes and flag any achievement, number or outcome that is not in them. Do not add new content to reach the limit.
Recount and compare with the question
Paste the final answer into the application field and read the form's own count if it shows one. Underline each part of the question and confirm the answer covers it. Keep the longer version in your notes for interviews and similar questions elsewhere. Check formatting after pasting, since line breaks and special characters sometimes change.
