Home upkeep

Make a home-maintenance calendar from the manuals

Generic maintenance lists rarely match what you own. Paste the service intervals from each appliance manual and include each machine's age, so the schedule fits your house.

A text to start with

Here are the service sections from my HVAC manual, water heater manual and range hood manual. The HVAC is three years old, the water heater is seven, and the range hood is new. Build a 12-month maintenance calendar using only the intervals these manuals specify. Mark any task the manual says needs a licensed technician.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the calendar

Trace every task to a specific manual. If an interval is a range in the original, the calendar should show the range, not one end of it. Tasks the manual labels professional-only should stay labeled that way. If you pasted only part of a manual, the assistant saw only that part, so compare against the full document for gaps.

Turning the calendar into reminders

Copy each task into your phone calendar or a shared household app, set for the month it falls due. For anything that needs a technician, put the model number and last service date in the event so you have them when you call.
