Find where a math solution went wrong

Copy your full working along with the final answer, and ask for the exact step where it goes wrong. Learning that an answer is wrong helps less than seeing the line where a rule was misapplied or a sign was dropped.

A text to start with

I am working on [problem type, e.g., solving a quadratic by completing the square]. Here is every step I wrote, numbered: [paste working]. My answer was [your answer] and the expected answer is [correct answer]. Show me the first step where I went wrong and name the rule I misapplied. Do not rewrite the whole solution from the beginning.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check

The explanation should point to a numbered line or a specific operation. A comment like "you made a sign error somewhere" is too vague to act on. Work the flagged step yourself before accepting the diagnosis. If that step looks correct to you, paste it back and ask for a slower breakdown. For coursework, compare the rule cited with your textbook or class notes, since notation and conventions differ between sources.

What to do next

Close the corrected version and redo the problem from scratch. If you get stuck at the same step, ask for a slower explanation of that rule. Try two similar problems with different numbers, then check your work against a reliable solution.
