Reuse and resale
Inventory items before listing them for resale
Write the inventory before the listings. Give each item an identifier, a condition note based on what you can see, a list of included parts and a photo reference. Listings then draw from one record instead of memory.
Item identifier: [ ] Brand and model as labeled: [ ] Observed condition: [ ] Parts included: [ ] Parts missing: [ ] Photo reference: [ ] Recall check: [date and where searched / not yet checked] Result of check: [ ] Identity unclear: [yes / no] Status: [not listed / listed / held / transferred] Repeat the item block as needed.
Descriptions that drift
Listings drift when the condition note is written from memory or the parts list changes between photos and text. Check that each condition note describes only what you can see and that missing parts are named. Look for items with no model or label information, since you cannot check recalls for something you cannot identify. CPSC directs resellers to check recalled and unsafe products and states that absence from a recall search does not establish safety, so treat a search as one step. Identify used children's products and electrical items before they transfer.
Find items whose identity is unclear or whose recall status has not been checked before transfer. Point out condition notes that say more than I observed, and parts lists that do not match the photo references. Flag any status set to listed or transferred while a recall check is blank.
Check identity, then list
For each item with a model or label, search the CPSC recall pages and record what you found and when. Hold any item you cannot identify, or that matches a recall, until you decide how to handle it. Take photos that match the inventory notes and record each reference. Copy listing text from the inventory and update the status column as items move.
