Plan a lesson sequence around one objective

Work backward from the lesson objective. Decide what evidence you will collect, then plan the explanation and practice that prepare learners for that check. Give each segment a learner action, material and time estimate. Include transitions and room to respond if learners need more help.

A text to start with

My objective is [objective] for [learner group], and I have [minutes]. Learners start with [starting knowledge]. Draft a sequence of segments covering explanation, guided practice, independent practice and a final check. For each segment, give the learner action, the material needed, a time estimate and what I will see that shows understanding. Mark any segment where learners mostly listen.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

Activities that do not practice the skill

For each segment, ask what the learner does with the target skill. A warm-up discussion, copying task or game may take time without practicing that objective. Check that the final task assesses the skill you taught and gives learners the stated level of support. Add the time estimates, including transitions and handing out materials. Where learners mainly listen, specify how you will check what they understood. Leave room to respond if the first practice attempt reveals a missing prerequisite.

Ask another agent to check the result

For each segment, state what the learner does with the target skill. Flag any segment where the answer is nothing, or where the skill practiced differs from the objective. Check that the timings add up to the stated lesson length, and report any segment with no evidence of understanding.

Run the sequence on paper first

Walk through the plan as a learner who arrives with only the stated starting knowledge. Note where you would get stuck or finish early. Decide which segment to shorten if time runs out, and which check result would tell you to reteach next time. Prepare the materials for the first two segments before refining the rest.
