Prepare a brief for an academic adviser
Bring a one-page brief with your goal, your current courses, the published requirement you are working toward and the decisions you need. Questions tied to a quoted requirement get better answers than general ones, and the adviser can confirm anything about your eligibility.
Meeting date and adviser: [ ] My goal: [ ] Catalog year I believe applies: [ ] Current courses: [ ] Published requirement, quoted: [ ] Page address and date I read it: [ ] My question: [ ] Decision I need from the adviser: [ ] Conclusion I reached on eligibility, to be confirmed: [ ] Adviser's answer: [ ] Steps I must take: [ ] Owner and due date: [ ]
Check the brief before the meeting
Requirement pages can differ by catalog year, so confirm which year applies to you before quoting one. A brief may sound certain about credits or eligibility when only your adviser or degree audit can settle that. Check that course names match the school's own records. Bundled questions get partial answers, so keep one decision per question. Leave out anything the adviser cannot act on. If you copied a requirement from a forum or a friend, say so, since it may be out of date.
Read this brief and mark every sentence that concludes I am eligible for a degree, major or requirement. Label each as something my adviser must confirm. Also flag any requirement quoted without a page address or catalog year.
Use the meeting well
If the school allows it, send the brief before the appointment, and bring a printed or open copy. During the meeting, write each answer and the date beside its question. Afterward, list every step the adviser named, such as submitting a form, and note who owns each. Keep the finished page with your academic records.
