Organize a personal recipe notebook

A recipe collection is most useful when you can find a dish while you're cooking. Describe what you have: how many recipes, where they came from, what notes or ratings you've added, and how you want to search for them.

A text to start with

I have about 60 recipes: handwritten cards, printed pages, and photos of cookbook pages. A few are my own, and most come from family members or books such as [book title]. About a dozen are duplicates of family favorites, each with different notes. I've tested maybe half of them and written notes on a few. I want to find recipes by main ingredient and by occasion. Help me design an index and a way to handle the duplicates.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check before you reorganize

Check the duplicate-handling plan against your real situation: several tested versions of the same dish, each with its own notes, rather than identical copies. Confirm the index categories match how you actually look for recipes while cooking. Try it on five recipes before committing the whole collection.

Building the index

Start with the dozen recipes you cook most often and place them in the system first. Once that works, add the rest in batches. If the categories feel wrong after the first batch, come back with three recipes that didn't fit and ask for an adjustment.
