Prepare questions about changing pet food

If you are considering a different food for an older cat with a health condition, organize your questions for the vet first. Include the current food, the proposed food and the change that prompted you to ask.

A text to start with

Help me write questions to ask my vet about switching my twelve-year-old cat from her current dry food to a senior formula wet food. I want to ask whether the switch is appropriate for her age and kidney values from her last bloodwork, what to watch for during a transition, how to tell if the new food isn't agreeing with her, and whether there are ingredients I should avoid given her history. I see the vet next Thursday.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check before the appointment

Check that the questions describe your cat's actual history without assuming a diagnosis or recommending a treatment. If the reply includes a feeding amount or transition schedule, remove it from the handoff and ask the vet for instructions suited to your cat. Bring the current and proposed food packaging so the vet can compare them.

After the appointment

Write down the vet's recommendations during the visit, including any timeline or amounts. If the vet recommends a prescription diet, ask for the recommendation in writing. Keep the clinic's number handy for the first week in case her eating or digestion changes.
