Prepare a new-device setup checklist

Factory defaults are rarely the settings you want. Drafting a checklist before you begin lets you handle security and backup in a sensible order, so you do not find a gap after the old device has been wiped.

A text to start with

I am setting up a new Android phone. Write me a checklist covering these steps: signing in to my Google account, turning on two-factor authentication, restoring my app backup, setting up fingerprint unlock, reviewing app permissions, and turning on automatic OS updates. I will do each step myself, so keep passwords and recovery codes out of the list.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the answer

Compare each step with the menus on your phone, since names and locations differ across Android versions and manufacturers. Do not wipe or trade in the old phone until the restore has finished and you have opened a few of your apps and files on the new one. Where the list says to sign in, decide in advance which Google account you mean, so you do not create a second one by accident. The checklist itself should never contain a password, recovery code, or security answer.

What to do next

Screenshot or print the list and work through it with the phone in your hand. Tick an item only after you have confirmed the setting saved, not merely opened the screen. If a menu path does not match what you see, the manufacturer's support page for your exact model is the place to resolve it.
