Plan a music practice session around a difficult passage

A practice plan aimed at one difficult passage moves faster than general run-throughs. Share your instrument, your approximate level, the exact bars you're working on, what isn't working, and how much time you have.

A text to start with

I play violin at an intermediate level. I'm working on a fast sixteenth-note passage in bars 34 to 41 of [piece name]. My intonation falls apart at anything above half tempo, and my bow arm tenses as I speed up. I have 45 minutes. I'd like a warmup, a structured approach to those bars, and a way to close the session. I practice with a metronome and have a recording of the piece.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check before following a practice plan

Confirm any physical technique suggestions with your teacher before you drill them, especially for the bow arm, embouchure, or hand position. A bad habit repeated slowly can be harder to undo later. Check that the time blocks fit your attention span and that the metronome markings start well below your current limit. You mentioned tension, so the plan should address it. If it doesn't, ask.

After the session

Note the tempo you reached and what still needs work, then share that next time so the starting point moves forward. If the tension lasted through the session, bring the plan to your teacher and ask them to watch those bars before your next practice.
