Ask the missing questions on an incomplete bug report

An incomplete bug report needs a few pointed questions, not a long form. List what the reporter already told you, identify the details you still need to reproduce the problem, and write one short question for each, with a reason.

A text to start with

Here is a bug report on [project]: [paste text]. List the facts it already gives me. Then identify only the missing details I need to reproduce the problem, such as version, environment, steps or expected result. For each, write one concise, polite question and a one-line reason. Do not ask for anything already supplied or for private data that is not needed.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

Questions worth asking

Reread the report before sending and delete any question it already answers; asking again signals you did not read it. Keep a question only if its answer would change what you try; otherwise drop it. Avoid asking for credentials, full logs containing personal data, account identifiers or customer records. If you need an error message or log, ask for the relevant lines and remind the reporter to remove sensitive values. Keep the tone neutral, ask no more than a handful of questions, and put the most useful one first.

Ask another agent to check the result

Check my questions against the original report. Remove any question the report already answers. Flag any request for private data, credentials or account details that is not strictly needed to reproduce the problem, and suggest a safer way to get the same information.

Send, then wait for answers

Post the questions as a single comment so the reporter can answer in one pass. State what you will try once you have the answers. If the reporter does not reply, note what you attempted and what is still unknown, so the issue can be closed or revisited with a clear record. When answers arrive, update the report with the full reproduction steps.
