Write a support ticket from an error message

Support teams resolve tickets faster when the error is quoted exactly, the steps are numbered, and the environment is named. A paraphrased error or a missing operating system version can send the conversation the wrong way.

A text to start with

Help me write a support ticket. When I try to export a report in our project management tool, I get this error: "Export failed: permission denied (403)." I am logged in as a standard user. It happened three times today in Chrome on Windows 11. I expected a PDF download. The same export worked last week. I will remove any account numbers before sending.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the answer

The ticket should quote the error text exactly, because support staff often search their logs for that string. Read the draft for account numbers, passwords, and personal data before sending. "It worked last week" is more useful if the ticket also names anything that changed since, such as a role change, a software update, or a different file type.

What to do next

Paste the draft into the support portal and read it once more for sensitive details. Attach a screenshot of the error if the form allows it. After you submit, write down the ticket number and date so a follow-up can refer to them.
