Find a small next step in an unfinished creative project

Unfinished projects stall for specific reasons. Describe the project, its current state, what stopped you, which materials or files you still have, and how much time you realistically have in the next week.

A text to start with

I started a hand-bound journal about 18 months ago. I have signatures sewn but not bound, a cover board cut, and a piece of leather that's the wrong size for the cover I designed. I stopped because the binding style I wanted was beyond my skill at the time. I have the tools, the materials, and about two hours this weekend. I don't want to abandon the project, but I don't want to start over either. What's a realistic next step?

What to check before you start

The suggested step should match the materials and tools you described. If it assumes a skill or equipment you didn't mention, ask for an alternative that works with what you have. Bookbinding repairs can have a point of no return, so if the step involves cutting or permanently gluing something, be sure you're ready first. If the technique is new to you, a suggestion to watch a tutorial before starting is worth taking.

After the first session

When the two hours are up, note exactly where you stopped and why. That note becomes the starting point for the next session's plan. If the binding style is still the blocker, describe the specific join or structure you're attempting and ask for a simpler one that keeps the sewn signatures.
