Plan a cloud-folder move without losing shared work

List who uses the folder and which links depend on it before changing its location. Check your provider's current instructions and choose a recoverable test. Prepare a backup or rollback method for the real move, then verify access, ownership and links with a collaborator.

A text to start with

I want to move [folder] on [provider] from [current location] to [destination]. It is shared with [people or groups] and referenced by [links or documents]. Make a plan covering provider behavior to confirm, a recoverable test, backup or rollback arrangements, notices to collaborators and checks after the move. Distinguish moving from copying. Mark details I have not supplied; do not perform changes.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What breaks quietly

A move can change who has access, especially when the destination has different sharing settings from the source. Whether shared links keep working after a move depends on the provider and sometimes on who owns the file, so confirm that in current help pages instead of assuming. Search for documents, spreadsheets and messages that link into the folder, since those fail one at a time later. Check ownership if the folder came from someone else. Test with a small folder shared with one willing collaborator, and have them confirm they can still open and edit.

Ask another agent to check the result

Check that this plan distinguishes a move from a copy and names a tested recovery method. Identify provider behavior still needing confirmation, differences between the test folder and real setup, and access or links not covered by verification. Do not assume an original remains in place after a move.

Run the small test

Create or choose a nonessential test folder that represents the relevant sharing setup, noting any differences from the real folder. Test the proposed move and restoration method. Ask a collaborator to check old links and the required access. Resolve failures before moving shared work. Notify affected people, perform the agreed checks afterward and retain the recovery copy for the period you decided.
