Getting around

Prepare a brief for a car service appointment

A mechanic can start faster when you describe what you noticed, when it began and under what conditions. Writing it down ahead of time also saves you from explaining it from memory at the counter.

A text to start with

My [year, make, model] with [mileage] miles has been making a low grinding noise from the front left when braking at speeds above 40 mph. It started about two weeks ago and feels slightly worse in wet weather. The last brake service was at [mileage] miles. I also want the scheduled [service type] done if it is due. Draft a brief I can email ahead to the shop.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

What to check in the answer

Keep the brief to what you observed: sounds, sensations, smells, when they happen and how long they have been going on. Cut any line that guesses at a cause or names a part, since that can steer the shop away from the real fault. Check that the vehicle details, mileage and service history are right. Include the VIN or plate number if the shop asks for it, since they use it to look up parts and service records. Diagnosis is the mechanic's job.

What to do next

Email the brief a day or so before the appointment and ask the shop to tell you if they need anything more. When you arrive, mention anything that has changed since you wrote it. Keep a copy to compare with the written estimate before any work starts.
