Check the claims in an article draft

List every statement of fact in the draft, find the source for each and note what that source says. Cut, soften or research any claim without support. Record the date you checked, since sources change.

A text to start with

Here is my article draft: [draft]. Source passages I have checked, with titles and locations, are [passages and references]. Extract factual claims and compare each with this material. Quote the passage that supports the exact claim, including numbers and qualifiers, or mark it unsupported or unchecked. Do not infer source contents from a title or link. Keep opinions and predictions labeled separately.

Example request. Change the details to fit your situation.

Claim check log

Draft title and version: [ ] Date of check: [ ] Repeat this block for each claim. Claim number: [ ] Claim as written: [ ] Source title and link: [ ] Wording in the source that supports it: [ ] Does the source say the same thing, including numbers and qualifiers? Citations that look right but are not

A source on the same topic may not support the specific claim. Check numbers, dates, names and qualifiers such as "most" or "usually" against the source text itself, not a summary of it. Watch for claims that join two sources into a statement neither makes. Treat anything the model calls "widely known" as unverified until you find a source. If a source is behind a login or will not open, mark the claim unchecked instead of passing it. Label opinions and predictions as such.

Ask another agent to check the result

Check each citation in this log. Find any case where the source mentions the topic but does not support the claim, number or qualifier as written. Quote the claim and the source wording side by side, then say whether to keep, rewrite or cut the claim.

Resolve each flagged claim

Go through the flagged lines one at a time. Open the source and copy the supporting wording into your log. Where it differs from your sentence, rewrite the sentence to match the source. Remove unsupported factual claims or keep them open for research. Label an actual opinion as an opinion without turning a factual error into one. Write the date checked beside each, then send the log with the draft to whoever approves publication.
